Micromax Canvas HD (A116) Review

I never knew that switching from Symbain OS based Smart phone to Android based Smart phone, will turn me into an Android phone/Phablet maniac. It all started back in 2010 when I replaced my Nokia 5233 smart phone with Samsung galaxy SL. From Then To till now Google has delivered several upgrades of android OS, I was on Froyo initially and now on Jelly bean, and now waiting for Key Lime Pie ;-) August 2012 when Micromax introduced Canvas (A100) I was very excited with the specifications of the phone even though it was not top of the line. And from then Micromax never looked back and introduced better and better smart phones. I have already spent enough time with Canvas (A100), Canvas 2 (A110) and Canvas HD (A116). So now I think that I can share my views with all of you. Before starting the review I would like to make this clear that I am not associated with Micromax other than as its customer. I also used other Indian brands like Karbonn and Celkon as well, however due to several other reasons they never inspired me to write a review. All views are my personal. I am not a regular reviewer so please excuse me for any mistake. Feedbacks are welcome. Key Specifications: 1.2 Ghz Quad core Processor 12.7 cm (5") HD Display with 1280*720 pixels screen resolution 16.7 Million Color Depth Android Jelly bean 4.1.2 PowerVR SGX544 GPU 8.0 MP Primary Camera with LED Flash 2.0 MP Front Camera Connectivity 3G, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, USB 2.0 2000 mAh battery For Pictures, 3d view Please click on the link below: Retail Packaging: You get a standard retail packaging for A116. The packaging is good but nothing extra ordinary. You get the handset, earphones, travel charger, USB to micro USB cable, warranty statement and user guide. The SAR value as mentioned on the box pack is 0.472 W/kg. The MRP as mentioned on Box is 17,499 but you get it for Rs. 13,990 from Pro: Quality of contents is good. Con: Ear phones are not in-ear type and very basic. Design and Build: The design is great and A116 looks and feels premium. Build quality is good and finishing is great of A116. However build is not as solid as >=20K worth mobile phones Due to low cost of this mobile. Note that build is GOOD and you don't pay ridiculously high amount only for greater build. Please note that this is not a phone it is a Phablet, that means it is larger than regular phones (4.5") and shorter than regular tablets (7"). As it has got a great 5" HD screen along with 3 capacitive touch buttons at the bottom it is a huge phone. Mind it and Please have a real time experience of this phone before buying this Phablet. Make sure you need a Phablet not a phone in this case. Because I have gone with the screen size craziness and also used 7" Phablet (Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 P3100) for 3 Months. It is pleasure to use big screen phones but not convenient and comfortable to hold and carry. So if you do not have larger hands or you do not have experience with >4.3" screen phone I will not advise you to get phone >4.7" screen. Pro: Looks premium, Good build, Great finish, Great Sensitivity for all 3 touch buttons. Con: Could have used On-screen buttons instead of capacitive buttons at the bottom to make the device shorter and easy to hold like A100, Nexus 4. Hit or Miss: Dual tone body colors (Black- Front, Dull White - Back) Display: The display is GREAT. It has an excellent screen resolution of 1280x720p which translate into 293.72ppi. Screen is sharp and color reproduction is great. The text, video and pictures, Web, apps look great on it. It is an LCD unit and different than AMOLED screens. I am not a fan of AMOLED screens due to over saturated color reproduction (It's a personal opinion). Viewing angles are good, no issues with viewing angles. Pro: Great high resolution 5" LCD, Sharp Text and Images, Natural color reproduction. Con: No Gorilla Glass protection. Processor: It has got a great 1.2 GHz Quad core Processor (Cortex A7 Mediatek MTK MT6589). Now most of you will start comparing Mediatek with other well-known brands. I will not go in details like benchmarks and high end gaming capabilities ETC because i know most of us are not looking at this device for chart buster performance. However i can ensure you that it is definitely better than any budget/mid-range mobile processor available in the market. Thanks to the powerful PowerVR SGX 544MP GPU, It can smoothly play most of the high end games, if it is compatible and you can install it in limited phone storage. It plays 1080p videos smoothly without any issues. Also applications, Web and animations are smooth on this device. It has got an excellent balance between power efficiency and performance. That means people thinking that 2000mh battery is not enough will be impressed with its power efficiency. Also Mediatek is not a new brand and most of the budget/mid-range handsets now a day are powered by Mediatek single/dual/quad core processors. Pro: Quad core CPU, PowerVR SGX544MP GPU, 1080p Video Playback, and Power Efficient. Con: Cortex A7 based CPU, Cortex A9 base CPU could have been better. Benchmark scores: Quadrant: 4039, 2nd time – 3881. Anututu: 13131, 2nd time – 12613. Nenamark2: 40.5fps. Linpack: single 37, multi 100. Camera: It has got an 8MP primary camera with an LED flash, the camera quality is average, but it is better than what I have seen in other budget handsets which includes A110 as well. There is a front 2MP camera for video chat as well. The camera of 8MP resolution can record videos in 1080p resolution (3gp video format) and it also plays it smoothly without any lags. The auto focus is good. There is no panorama option. Please do not expect too much with the camera. Pro: 1080p video capture, 2MP front cam Con: Soft pictures (Quality is not that sharp); LED Flash is not that great, no panorama. RAM: It's good to see at least 1GB ram in this phone. Most budget phone comes with only 512MB of RAM. I think 1GB ram is more than enough for an average/moderate user. Applications, UI, OS, and Multitasking work smoothly without any issues or Lag. Pro: 1GB is more than enough for average/moderate user. Con: None. Battery: It has got a 2000mh which easily lasts for a day with moderate usage with dual SIM.I have SIM 1 with 3G always on for my data needs and SIM 2 with 2G for Voice calls. I typically use phone for about 15-20 minutes of Calls, 30 minutes of Gaming, and around 3-3.5 hours of Internet browsing and Facebook and 2-3 hours of audio playback. Pro: Easily lasts for a day, Less time for charging. Con: None. 2G/3G/ WIFI/Bluetooth/GPS: All the connectivity options work without any issues. However GPS takes some time to get locked. Pro: HSPA+ (DL-21Mbps, UL-11Mbps), BT 4.0 Con: Dual band GSM and Single band HSPA, Will not work in most countries. Call Quality/Network reception: Call quality and Network reception is good, I did not find any issues for the same. In call volume is good and it is clear and loud even at max volume level. Speaker phone volume is average for both Calls and Multimedia. However at high volume on multimedia playback the quality is neither great nor more than average. Pro: Good Call quality and Network reception Con: Speaker phone volume and quality could have been better. Multimedia Playback: All kind of multimedia playback is pleasure on this phone. It plays HD contents smoothly and Images, Videos are sharp on the screen. Color reproduction is also great. Even audio quality is above average. However using better quality ear phones with PowerAmp application allows you to have great music experience. Pro: Great audio/video/images/web experience. Con: Speaker is average. Sensors: Standard sensors like Proximity, Motion, Gravity, Light sensors are present, which works great. Micromax has skipped an important sensor which is Magnetic sensor. Due to unavailability of Magnetic sensor, Compass does not work at all and point to point navigation also does not work correctly. However Google map works correctly with mobile data, only catch is you do not get your correct direction. There is an LED notification light as well. Pro: All Sensors work great, LED notification. Con: No Magnetic sensor. Storage: The only disappointment I have with this phone is the internal storage provided with this phone which is 1.77GB user available out of onboard 4GB of storage. However you have an option to extend the storage via Micro SD card of up to 32GB but all apps and games get stored on the internal storage which is the limitation (1.77 GB). You can use External storage to store Music, Videos, Documents, Images ETC. Pro: Expandable storage via Micro SD up to 32GB. Con: Internal storage is very low for such a capable phone; at least 8GB is expected. Verdict: So why should I buy or not buy this phone? Why should I buy Chinese rebranded mobile. What about after sales service? There are number of options available in the market when we talk about budget phones, and day by day the numbers are increasing. If your budget is around 15K, I don't see any direct competition from a stable brand in India which offers more than Micromax A116@13990Rs. If you are not a heavy gamer (Low internal storage will disappoint you) and live with the after sales service of Micromax (Takes more time for repairs), believe me Guys right now it is a steal. Other Quad cores: Zopo 950+, Zopo 810, Xolo Q800, UMI X2, Jiayu G4.

Good Value for money gadget

This phone just makes up for its price. Though of late, its clearly seen that MMX is charging for brand as well when compared to Karbonn Titanium S5. But kudos to MMX. Atleast you ve given other big brands a run for their money.

Nice phone at this price

I received this product on 28th March 2012, and for the past 3 days I have used it a lot. From the initial usage I can say the phone is awesome. The built is superb, touch sensitivity is great, colors and images appear crisp. Battery life is fine. All in all I would say a superb effort from Micromax. Believe me I have become a fan of theirs.... Keep it up! In one line 'This phone can'

Excellent phone :)

Well I've Been using this product from a week now and its totally worth the money. The touch and the resolution beats most Samsung phones hands down. The user interface is pretty cool too .. Super fast when it comes to multi taksing .. The only con is its back cover, that's too slippery, so that's a drawback . Another thing is the phone getting heated, when u use the phone for too long the phone gets heated upwwhich can create trouble for people who tends to use their phones for a longer duration of time. Camera is not the best but it certainly is not the worst, manageable and the music too is good :) The company could have given a better headset but then again the price comes into picture. Browsing speed is good. In the end I'd just say that the phones delivers everything that it promises and its worth your money. Thnx.

You cant get better this!

If you think this is a budget phone because of the price? Think again! To start with, the first power up and you will notice its large IPS screen come to life, probably the best around beating even the heavy budget phones. With its Quadcore Processor and GPU everything works without strain. Whats a general problem with high end Android phones is stability. So after downloading some intensive apps from the store it was up for a real test. Running Skype over 2G connection I was able to make a video call! With pretty good clarity and not too many framedrops. Im still loading apps and they run together and still waiting for my phone to crash! So for the price don't expect very fancy features like HDMI out or Dolby stereo speakers but it has a decent camera. Don't expect Super SLR photography, out of focus sections are a bit grainy. The shutter is quick and responsive. Battery meets my needs quite well and I run my GPRS on always and have a low signal at my apartment, lasts about a day. Using WiFi instead can make that battery life a lot longer. The phone is quite slim and is not too bulgy in the pocket. At first impression people think its an expensive phone... they play with it a bit and ask "is this a sam.... OMG its Micromax!" Anyway just note that you may not get a screen guard in the pack, perhaps because the phone is new and its still getting made. Of course the Android Jelly bean brings so much to the phone, even the voice input works in an offline mode (of course you need to initially download it) The email app is really good. So no need to pull out a bulky laptop at the waiting lounge. My experience has been better than expected an am proud that an Indian brand really is giving world giants a run for their money. The finish is also great and in no way indicates that it is budget phone, besides it also has 1 year warranty in case anything on the inside goes wrong.

A116 - Best SmartPhone below 15k

I was pleased to have received the mobile that i waited for over 3 months. At 1st sight i could easily notice that the mobile has more sleek and refined design. The thickness is made less and its ergonomically better than the A110. The display is very good and the quality of touch is exceptional.I was in a dilemma on what to buy Samsung Grand or A116. But i am sure i bought the right product. Samsung grand will take ages to give this performance. The competitive pricing gives Micromax its edge. The mobile is very user friendly and can be easily handled. The battery is fair and the display and camera outperforms all its competitors for the same price. On an overall i rate this product as 5/5 and i feel if anyone is looking forward to buy a mobile for less than 15k, trust me its not a Sony, neither is it a Samsung that will give you the value for money, its the micromax A116 HD.
