Sensors and Optics

The D7000 has a DX-format CMOS image sensor that offers 16.2 million effective pixels. To record uncompressed images, the sensor features a 14-bit A/D conversion for RAW images (12-bit selectable). For low-light photography, the camera has a sensitivity range from ISO 100 to 6400, which can further be raised up to ISO 25600-equivalent. You can record Full HD movie clips in 1920 x 1080 pixels resolution at 24 frames per second.

The built-in flash of the D7000 has a guide number of 12 metre (at ISO 100). There is a large 3 inch LCD with VGA resolution that displays high quality pictures for clear reference. It provides 100% frame coverage and has 170° viewing angle. The camera has Face Detection system to ensure sharp, well-exposed faces in photographs. The bundled kit lens AF-S 18-105mm VR has a 5.8x zoom power. The DX-format lens offers a focal length range of 27-157.5mm (in 35mm equivalent). Its VR mechanism counters accidental camera shake to offer sharp photographs. Nikon has incorporated ED-(Extra-low Dispersion) and Aspherical lens elements to minimize various aberrations in photographs. The lens has a closest focusing distance of 1.48 feet.

Body and Design

The D7000 camera sports a conventional DSLR body ergonomically designed to offers comfortable access to all controls. The mid-range camera has a viewfinder with approx. 100% frame coverage both horizontally and vertically. In addition to a relaxing 19.5 mm eyepoint, the viewfinder features dioptre correction that makes it user-friendly for people using glasses. Along with the kit lens, the camera weighs about 1200 grams which feels solid in hand.

Storage and Connectivity

To record and store images, the D7000 camera accepts SD, SDHC as well as SDXC memory cards. There are 2 memory card slots to accommodate 2 cards at a time. The camera supports data transfer via Hi-Speed USB port. In addition, video can be output to external devices. A Type C mini-pin HDMI connector supports HDMI output.

Other Features
For advanced TTL exposure metering, the D7000 uses a 2016-pixel RGB sensor. Advanced metering method such as 3D colour matrix metering II is used to offer a balanced exposure for images with varied degree of light levels. Creative users can play with up to +/-5 EV exposure compensation. Active D-Lighting feature helps recover shadows areas from a high-contrast photograph. With 39-point dynamic-area AF and 3D-tracking features, the camera is highly recommended for photojournalists and sports photographers. Up to 6fps continuous image shooting further renders the camera suited for fast action photography.

Nikon has constructed the camera frame from a sturdy magnesium alloy and the body is further reinforced with weather-resistant and anti-dust capabilities. Event and wildlife photographers will appreciate a Quiet Shutter-release Mode that dampens clicking sound.
