Sensors and Optics

The D90 features a DX-format CMOS image sensor that offers an effective resolution of 12.3 megapixels. Impressively, Nikon has incorporated a Dust Reduction System to the sensor to shake off any dust accumulation that might occur during change of lenses. The sensor is also designed for low-noise performance that lets you shoot quality photographs even under low light conditions. The hybrid DSLR camera can record 720p high definition (1,280 x 720 pixels) movie clips as well.

The in-built flash has a guide number of 12 metre (at ISO 100 / auto mode) and offers 18mm equivalent lens coverage. The 3 inch LCD of the D90 has a high resolution of 920k dots and the Live View monitor lets you frame picture while shooting photographs. The LCD features 170° ultra-wide viewing angle to offer clear view from extreme angles. The integrated Face Detection system is complemented by face-priority autofocus enabled in Live View mode.

The bundled kit lens AF-S 18-105mm VR has a 5.8x zoom power. The DX-format lens offers a focal length range of 27-157.5mm (in 35mm equivalent). Its VR mechanism counters accidental camera shake to offer sharp photographs. Nikon has incorporated ED-(Extra-low Dispersion) and Aspherical lens elements to minimize various aberrations in photographs. The lens has a closest focusing distance of 1.48 feet.

Body and Design

The D90 has a conventional DSLR camera body that offers effective access to all buttons and controls. The view finder provides approx. 96% frame coverage and a comfortable 19.5 mm eyepoint. The camera with the kit lens weighs 1040 grams and offers a solid enough feel for indoor as well as outdoor shoots.

Storage and Connectivity

The Nikon D90 DSLR camera accepts SD memory cards and is compliant with SDHC cards as well. It supports data download via Hi-Speed USB port. It’s also compatible with HDMI output.

The mid-level DSLR camera uses a 420-pixel RGB sensor that improves autofocus, auto exposure and auto white balance performance.
