The phone is a brilliant piece of technology, if you get a defect free piece. I have been using the replacement piece since the last 4 days and here are my observations / comments:-

Build/ Design.
The follows design cues seen in a lot of recent large screen smartphones often referred to as 'phablets'. The phone sports a rectangular slab form factor with rounded edges and is Black in colour.

The front of the phone is dominated by its 5-inch display, with the three capacitive keys - Menu, Home (doubles up as the task-switcher key on long press) and the Back key placed just below it. The 3.2-megapixel front-facing camera, a notification LED light and sensors are located above the screen just adjacent to the earpiece.
The Power/ Lock key is located on the right side of the phone, while the Volume rocker key is at the left. There are no ports on the bottom, while the Micro-USB port and 3.5mm headset jack sit at the top.

The back of the phone sports a soft rubberized finish which gives the phone a premium look and makes it pleasant to hold. The 8-megapixel rear camera lens located at the upper part of the back along with an LED flash, while the speaker outlet is located towards the bottom.

The phone has a removable back cover and opening it reveals the battery compartment with slots for 2 SIM cards and a microSD card slot. The SIM cards are not hot-swappable because of the placement of the slots.
There's some minimalist ZEN and Ultrafone branding on the back of the phone. Overall, the design of the phone is understated but exudes a pleasant feel.

Display

The comes with a 5-inch IPS HD screen that has a resolution of 720x1280 pixels and pixel density of 295ppi, which is pretty good and graphics and text appear sharp. The viewing angles look good, and the under-sun visibility on the phone is decent. The screen is not very reflective. Videos and pictures look good albeit a little less vivid compared to AMOLED displays but then again AMOLED displays offer saturated colours.

Camera

The 8-megapixel autofocus shooter takes good quality images in daylight. However, I observed that pictures taken in low-light conditions did not come out well. Also, at times colour reproduction was not that accurate with the pictures coming out a little oversaturated. Pictures taken indoors with less light were also little grainy.
The phone can record HD videos and I found that the quality of videos captured through the back camera was good. It also offers EIS or Electronic Image Stabilization to minimize distortions caused by shaking of hands while shooting a video. Unfortunately, the camera saves videos in the archaic .3gp file format.

The phone comes with a customized Camera app and allows you to capture photos in HDR, Multi angle view and Panorama modes as well. It comes with the usual controls including settings for Exposure, Colour effect, White balance and ISO, among others. The phone's camera also supports continuous shots taking up to 99 shots in that mode, smile detection and face detection. Some of the options in the camera app's interface are not self-descriptive which makes it unintuitive for new smartphone users.

The front camera takes above average shots and is great for video calls. Overall, I feel that the phone's pretty good for casual photography.

Software/ Interface

The runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, the latest iteration of the OS. Zen has not skinned the OS. There are five customisable home screens that can be filled with app shortcuts and widgets. The notification tray also features a settings shortcut and a clear all notifications button, along with expandable notifications (expanded with the two finger pull gesture). It features the same setting toggles shortcut that's found in stock Android for quick access to Airplane Mode, Battery status, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, Data connection, Data usage, Audio Profiles, Brightness, screen backlight Timeout and Auto Rotation.

The phone also offers another Android 4.2 feature, Daydream that displays photo albums or the clock while the phone's charging. The option to wirelessly mirror the phone's display with an HDMI enabled device through a wireless display adapter is also present.

As I mentioned earlier, the phone features three capacitive buttons for navigation - Menu, Home and, for respective functions with Home button doubling up as the task switcher on long press. I'd like all manufacturers to switch to the three soft controls that are included in the Stock version of the OS. One major gripe with these buttons is that they don't light-up in the dark even when the screen is on until you press one of them.

Android 4.2 Jelly Bean also offers Google Now, which needs to be initialised for the first time, before use. For the uninitiated, Google Now is a voice-based information assistant and an extension of Google search. You can ask questions and the tool returns answers or search results. It uses 'cards' which are essentially small boxes that offer different sets of information ranging from weather forecast, directions, traffic information, scores, appointments, and currency conversion, among others. Google Now collects information based on the user's behaviour, location, and even e-mail, to offer information automatically.

Zen has also bundled some apps with the phone including ColorNote for creating colour coded notes and task lists, Emoze - a push email client, a File Browser, Flashlight, Saavn, Skype, a ToDo app, TOI news app, a video player app, MX Player (another video player), Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and Zen's own app store.

Performance/ Battery Life

The is powered by a 1.2GHz Mediatek MT6589 quad-core processor. It has 1GB RAM onboard, and PowerVR SGX 544MP chip for processing graphics. There is 4GB of internal storage, which is expandable up to 32GB via a microSD card.

With Android Jelly Bean, the overall experience of navigation through the interface is impressive, thanks to Project Butter and the phone's quad-core processor. I am not experiencing any lag while launching apps, playing games, scrolling web pages or switching between apps. It is safe to say that performance wise, the Zen trumps other dual-core processor powered phones in this price range.

I am able to play full-HD clips smoothly and the phone supports formats like .AVI and .MOV, natively. The speaker on the phone delivers decent quality sound at high volume levels, but there's some muffle when the phone lies on its back, as the speaker grill is located on the back. The headphones that come with the phone offer average quality sound output. The phone also offers FM Radio. It also offers Audio Profiles to quickly switch between different sound settings.

Call quality is good. The phone is also able to get a GPS lock rather easily while using the Maps app.

The phone comes with a 2000mAh battery, and based on my experience (having used it for the last 4 days), it will just about last you a full day to 1 1/2 days with medium to heavy usage, including 1-1.5 hours of phone calls, two e-mail accounts with push notifications, screen at maximum brightness, playing some music and video clips, Twitter notifications and WhatsApp chats.

Verdict

At a price of Rs. 11,999 the is a competent budget smartphone that delivers good performance. In addition to its 720p display, the major selling point of this phone is that it runs the most recent iteration of Android without additional skinning. I hope that Zen doesn't disappoint when it comes to offering OS updates in the future.

If you're looking at alternatives, the Micromax A116 Canvas HD comes close but is priced higher. I like the 's build quality more than that of the Canvas HD. If you're not particularly looking at a 720p display, the Karbonn S1 Titanium is another good budget quad-core phone.

The beast is finally out

Zen has finally introduced the best in class low budget smart phone, the 701HD. With its Mediatek 1.2 GHZ MTK6589 quad core processor,PowerVRSGX 544 GPU and 1 GB RAM ,multi-tasking has become smoother than ever and handling heavy high end games like BATMAN,NFSMW,GTSVC etc has become a piece of cake. High display clarity is guaranteed by zen with its outstanding 1280x720p screen. With built in 4GB ROM,of which 1.77GB is usable, and also a choice to expand to 32 GB,storage side is also made intact by zen.An 8MP BIS sensor camera similar to the technology implemented in Iphones, gives the best crisp and sharp pictures in the class, and also provided with a 3.2 MP front camera for superb quality video chats. It packs a decent 2000mAh battery, which consumers think could have been improved a bit for battery backup, but under normal conditions even with 3G on,its likely to operate well over the day. With preloaded 4.2 jelly bean, the latest android OS,the company claims no further upgrades in the mean while. Also its packed with a bulk of pre-loaded apps like skype, facebook, zenstore etc and many more.

The service and after sales service may seem a bit confusing, but zen has arranged decent packages to to handle their customers. And to conclude,if you are looking for a high end phone, with class-one features at very low price, zen 701HD is the right choice for you.

Pros: HD display, quad core processor,1 GB RAM,lowest price (Rs 11999 ,2500 lower than main rival micromax a116 HD), 8MP rear BIS cam,3.2MP front cam

Cons:No screen protection,low in-built memory,service centers availabilty.

    Best Phone under Rs.17000....

    By Saleesh S

    from Bangalore

Reviewer has purchased this product from Snapdeal.com

I received the phone on 7th May.

    Review.

My first impression is that this is the best phone under Rs.17000.
I have tried almost all available quad core phones in the market from Lava Q800 to Samsung S4. I wonder how Zen could sell such a brilliant phone under Rs.12000.

    Pros

    1. Good build quality. Resembles Samsung phones.
    2. Great screen. Felt same like Samsung S2. It is so sharp, colourful and bright that you will not believe it is a sub 15k phone.
    3. Almost pure android like Nexus 4. Jelly Bean 4.2.1 is majorly untouched. Zen has just installed few apps.
    4. Antutu gave a score of 13173 which is a good score. Better than Canvas HD.
    5. The phone has every hardware sensors available on mobiles except temperature and pressure sensors.
    6. Both front and back cameras are able to shoot 1080p videos with good quality.
    7. Sound is loud and clear on the speakers.
    8. Accessories (Charger, USB cable, Flip cover, headphone) are of decent quality.

    Cons

    1. Battery life is average. Not meant for people who cannot carry their charges for long journeys.
    2. There is a software bug that gives the message 'Thanks for registering with Zen mobile' every day.
    3. Internal memory is low.

Don't exactly know about the product quality. so cant talk about that. But from the comments coming from the official Facebook page of ZEN, the impression is that most of the people are getting faulty handsets, and then we have to face the nightmarish experience of waiting for the replacements, following the snapdeal and ZEN customer care :(

    Display problem

My Ultrafone 701 is one week old but not an happy time for me.

Right bottom side of the display is developing one sharp white line/patch of 1cm in length which is visible when you reduce the contrast or restart the mobile phone. It is growing and I guess it is of display issues. I have tried restarting the mobile phone but of no use.

I have sent a mail to "Zen Care" and waiting for the reply. I guess display needs to be changed in my case. This hurts me really as it is only a week old and I have to look for the service which is really hard to get and may take a month or so to get it resolved.

Off course it has a software bug that displays "Thanks for registering your mobile with Zen" once in every day.

The very use of Phone suffers due to Improper SIM supporting.Unable to use as a Phone 3 days after purchase by online.Have to visit service centre.Other features just satisfactory.Substandard labelling for SIM insertion guidance.Disappointed.

    Worth Every Penny

The is an excellent buy in the budget phablet category. With a quad core processor & 1 GB RAM multi-tasking & playing games like temple run is a breeze. The 5" HD display is pretty good for such a phone with a hint of over saturation in colours but its not jarring at all. There is 4GB of internal memory of which about 1.7GB is available for use. The 8 megapixel camera offers good photos, the colours on the default settings seem to have a slight bluish tinge to them which is hardly noticable, I believe with some minor tweaking that can be eliminated as well. The phone comes with Android Jelly Bean 4.2 pre-loaded which has some significant improvements such as gesture typing which is very good for fast typing. The touch panel is smooth and offers the right amount of feedback in touch operations. The phone is a dual sim.

The sales package from Snapdeal came with a 2 GB micro SD Card and scratch guard in additional to the flip cover and white back cover already included in the sales package with the usual stuff.

The only thing that needs a bit of improvement is the quality of the plastics which appear a bit flimsy especially the free covers.

All in all an excellent phone with a right balance of features at a value for money price, which is lower than other phones with similar specifications.

Highly recommended as its a value for money phone.

Pros: Quad Core Processor, 1 GB RAM, 5" HD display, 8MP (Rear Cam) , 3.2MP (Front Cam), Dual Sim, 3G,

Cons: Mediocre Plastic Quality, Low Internal Memory (4 GB Provided), No Choice of Colors

    It Has a GPU

    By Ishaan

I have contacted Zen Mobiles to know about the GPU and below is what they say...

"As per the concern identified, In this phone PowerVRSGX 544 GPU is available."

So you can surely run the best games on this...

I'm planning to purchase this one...

Great Smart Phone at budget price.

The phone itself is very good.In the past 2 days there were no issues.Features wise this is a great performer.
The Zen guys gave 2 Screen guards and also bundled 3 back covers(1 Black and 1 White)and third black back cover with flipcover attached.
Front and back Cameras are Superb.
It was also shipped with a free 2gb SD Card.
I am not a gamer but regular games like temple run runs smoothly.
    Touch is very responsive.
Audio quality via phone speakers and headphones is satisfactory.

The only thing I dont understand is where is the 4GB ROM.
The phone specs mention 1GB RAM & 4GB Rom and this 4GB ROM is not visible in the Hardware Info report, thats my only query.

    True Value for Money

Recieved the product 2 days back. Still exploring. A real value for money and the right pack for folks who are not really heavy brand conscious.

Good touch response, nice plastic, good features and on top of it some freebies. At a high level gaming also looks good.

Still to explore all. But at first sight is really worth the money!! Recommend.
