Area Based Handling Charges

What are 'area-based handling charges'?

Area-based handling charges include taxes applied by certain state governments and local authorities when certain items enter that particular state upon purchase from a seller located in another state. These charges vary from state to state as well as the items they are applied on. Some items are exempt from these charges. States which apply these charges are:

  • Andhra Pradesh
  • Assam
  • Bihar
  • Chhattisgarh
  • Goa
  • Gujarat
  • Haryana
  • Himachal Pradesh
  • Karnataka
  • Kerala
  • Madhya Pradesh
  • Maharashtra
  • Orissa
  • Rajasthan
  • Tamil Nadu
  • Uttar Pradesh
  • Uttarakhand
  • West Bengal

How are these charges calculated? Give me an example.

Area-based handling charges are charged by the couriers for the transport of certain items between states. This amount will be included in the total amount payable to Snapdeal. Here is an example:

A customer purchases an item worth Rs. 1,000 (inclusive of shipping charges) to be delivered to Mumbai from a seller located outside Maharashtra. An additional 1% (state and item dependent) of Rs. 1,000 will be applied over and above it. The total amount to be paid will be Rs. 1,000 + Rs. 10 = Rs. 1,010

Are these charges applicable on all items/categories?

No. Different states have different sets of categories and items on which they apply area-based handling charges. Further, the charge on a particular item varies from state to state.

Are these charges dependent on my delivery address?

Yes. Let's say your delivery address is in a state which applies an area-based handling charge on the item you are ordering. If the item is delivered from a seller outside your state, the relevant charge will apply.

How can I avoid these charges?

You can avoid these charges by:

- Purchasing from a seller who is located within your state.

- Placing orders for delivery to a state where these charges don't apply. These charges DON'T apply on delivery to the following states/union territories:

  • Delhi
  • Arunachal Pradesh
  • Sikkim
  • Manipur
  • Tripura
  • Nagaland
  • Mizoram
  • Daman and Diu
  • Andaman & Nicobar Islands
  • Chandigarh
  • Dadra & Nagar Haveli
  • Lakshadweep
  • Puducherry
  • Telangana
  • Jammu & Kashmir
  • Jharkhand
  • Meghalaya
  • Punjab

Do I have to pay these charges multiple times if I order more than one item?

Each state has a list of items on which these charges are applied. If you purchase one or more of these items, the relevant charges will be applied on each item. Charges will not apply on an item exempted by your state.

E.g. you order 3 items of which 2 are on your state's list of area-based handling charges. The relevant charges for these 2 items will be added to your total payable amount IF these items are delivered from outside your state.

Do I have to pay these charges multiple times if I order multiple units of the same item?

The area-based handling charges are applicable on each unit of a particular item. E.g. you purchase 3 units of a relevant item. The charge will be applied thrice.

Will these charges be refunded if I cancel/return the order?

Yes. If your order has been successfully cancelled or returned, the entire amount inclusive of area-based handling charges will be refunded to you.

What happens if I initiate a replacement for my item?

Area-based handling charges will not be applied on delivery of a replacement item.
