Synopsis

Lajja is the story of the Dutta family's tryst with communal turmoil in Bangladesh. As a response to the anti-Hindu riots in Bangladesh, Taslima Nasreen weaves a story around the rise of communal feelings in the country after the demolition of Babri Masjid in India. Lajja revolves around the lives of the Duttas in Bangladesh - Sudhamoy and Kironmoyee, and their children Maya and Suranjan.

Having lived in the country all their lives, the Duttas refuse to leave, like their friends and relatives, even when the small Hindu community is attacked by Muslim fundamentalsts. Sudhamoy's idealism and optimism makes him believe that he will not be let down by his motherland.

Each family member has different feelings about the situation. The novel explores the metamorphosis of feelings and beliefs as the Duttas face the heat when the nightmare comes knocking their door.
