நமக்குப் பெயரளவில் மட்டுமே பரிச்சயமான இலங்கையின் வரலாற்றைச் சொல்லும் 'மகாவம்சம்' இதோ நூல் வடிவில். பாலி மொழியிலிருந்து ஆங்கிலத்தில் மொழிபெயர்க்கப்பட்டதன் தமிழ் வடிவம் இது. பல்லேறு புத்த பிக்குகளால் நாள்குறிப்பு வடிவத்தில் எழுதப்பட்டவை. கி.பி. 5-ம் நூற்றாண்டில் மஹாநாம மஹாதேராவால் முதல் முறையாக ஒரு நூலாக தொகுக்கப்பட்டது. அவ்வகையில், இது மிகப் புராதனமான பிரதியும் ஆகும். கி.மு.6-ம் நூற்றாண்டு தொடங்கி கி.மு.4-ம் நூற்றாண்டு வரையிலான இலங்கையின் வரலாற்றைச் சொல்லும் மகா வம்சம், சிங்களர்களின் புனித நூலாகவும் கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது. அவர்களது ஆதிகால வரலாற்றை மட்டுமில்லாமல் இலங்கையின் புத்த மதத்தின் தோற்றம், வளர்ச்சி குறித்த துல்லியமான மதீப்பீட்டையும் இது முன்வைக்கிறது. தவிரவும் இந்திய வரலாற்றின் ஆரம்பக்கால அத்தியாயங்கள் பலவற்றையும் மகா வம்சத்தில் காண முடியும். 'சிங்களப் பேரினவாதம்' என்று தமிழர்களால் வருணிக்கப்பட்டு, இன்றளவும் அங்கே கொழுந்து விட்டெரியும் இனப்பிரச்னையின் வேர், மகா வம்சத்திலிருந்துதான் உதிக்கிறது.அதனால்தான், சர்ச்சைக்குரிய ஒரு நூலாகவும் மகா வம்சம் கருதப்படுகிறது. Mahavamsam is a book that gives us the history of Sri Lanka known to us as a name only so far. The Tamil translation is from an English translation of the original in Pali language. It was written in the form of daily notes by various Buddhist monks and was collected in a book form in 5th century AD by Mahanama Mahadevar for the first time. And as such, it is an ancient text also. The book, which tells us the history of Sri Lanka from 6th century BC to 4th century BC, is celebrated as a holy book by the Singhalese. It presents not only the earliest history of Sri Lanka but also the history of the origin and development of Buddhism there in a detailed and authentic manner. We can also see the chapters of early Indian history in Mahavamsam. The burning issue of the present communal problem has its roots in Mahavamsam where it is called Argument of the Great Community of the Singles.
