Shantaram is the story of an escaped Australian convict Lindsay who is rechristened Shantaram during his stay in India. The story of the novel is gripping and engaging, and will keep the readers wanting more.

Synopsis

This book tells the story of a man, Lindsay, who is an Australian convict on the run. Lindsay is imprisoned on the charge of robbery but he escapes prison midterm. He lands up in Mumbai, with a fake passport, before he could run away to Germany. Here he meets the Mumbai city guide Prabekar who takes him to his village house. Prabekar's mother finds Lindsay very quiet and so renames him as Shantaram, the quiet and peaceful man. With this, Shantaram decides to stay back in Mumbai and Prabekar becomes his guide as he gets introduced to the Mumbai slums, poverty, prostitution and the film industry. He works for gangster Abdel Kader Khan who helps him escape the Australian police.

However, with the death of Abdel Kader Khan, Shantaram feels lost and vulnerable and finds out that in an attempt to escape punishment of crime he got involved in the bad world all the more thickly.

About the author

The author Gregory David Roberts is Australian by origin and he suffers the same fate as Shantaram. Rather his first novel, Shantaram, is largely influenced by his own life story.
