Excerpt from The Wit and Wisdom of Rev. Charles H. Spurgeon: With an Introductory
Fifteen years later, I went to the Tabernacle on my way home from Damascus. The same straightforward English man was preaching the same straightforward gospel in all its fulness and freeness, and without any apology for its severity. I walked into the vestry without introduction. He had not seen me for ten years, but he recognized me in the crowd without a moment's hesitation. He ran over the books on the Holy Land, stating the merits of each, and ended by saying, I suppose Thompson's 'the Land and the Book' is still the best on the manners and customs. He had the literature of Palestine at his finger ends.
