Synopsis

This is the first part of the book that throws light on Indian history during the time of Harappa and Indus Valley Civilization, and the author also discuss the possible reasons of the decline of the civilization. While discussing the Aryan invasion theory, he brings out various research papers and findings. Evolution of the Hindu religion from the time of Harappan civilization to the Aryans and mutual influence that the different religions like Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism etc. had over one another over time is also discussed. 3rd edition of the book also gives an insight in modern Indian society and the culture says how it has become a confluence of culture through various stages of its history.

About the Author

An Indologist and professor at London's School of Oriental and African Studies, A.L. Basham was born in 1914 in Essex. The stories he heard from his father, who served in Indian army, sparked in him the profound interest that he has on this country. He obtained a degree in Sanskrit from the School of Oriental and African Studies and after doing his doctorate from the same went on to become a professor at it. Later on, he became the Head of the History Department and also Professor of Oriental Civilizations in Australia National University.
