Sidney Sheldon was born on February 1917 in Chicago. He is a writer and also a producer. Sidney at age 10, sold a poem of his for $5. He wrote a lot of short plays during his college. His writing was first recognised in the Bismarck Hotel where he worked when he handed a song that he had written to the orchestra leader. His song was played for many following nights. Sidney Sheldon was a great screenwriter for 12 years at the MGM studios and Paramount pictures. He wrote a series of movies later on like 'Easter Parade', 'Annie get your gun', 'Jumbo' and 'Anything goes with being Crosby'. Later he left the MGM studios and concentrated on television with the ABC network, where he created the show 'The Patty Duke show'. He wrote about 78 scripts for the two-year show. He later wrote and produced the series 'I Dream of Jeannie'. He got an Emmy nomination for this. He also wrote another series 'Hart to Hart'. He later decided to write novels.
In 1969, Sidney Sheldon wrote his first novel 'The Naked Face', which got him a nomination for Edgar Allan Poe award in the category, Best First Novel. It was turned down by five publishers before it got published. It was described as the 'Best Mystery Novel of the year'. 'The other side of midnight' was his next novel, which was no.1 in New York Times Best Seller list. He has also written 'A Stranger In The Mirror', 'Master Of The Game', 'Bloodline', 'Rage Of Angels', 'If Tomorrow Comes', 'The Sands Of Time', 'Memories Of Midnight', 'Windmills Of The Gods', 'The Doomsday Conspiracy', 'Nothing Lasts Forever', 'The Stars Shine Down', 'Morning, Noon & Night', 'Tell Me Your Dreams', 'The Best Laid Plans', 'The Sky Is Falling' and 'Are You Afraid Of The Dark?'. He also wrote 'The Other Side of Me', an autobiography, where he talks about his struggle with bipolar disorder. Most of Sidney Sheldon's novels were on Women in the tough men world. His novels had intense suspense and most of his readers were women. He has mentioned in interviews that he loved writing novels compared to scripts as when you are writing a novel you are on your own but in scripts, it isn't that way, he also said that 'writing is a freedom that didn't exist in any other medium'.
Sidney Sheldon was first married to Jane Harding. He was later married to an actress Jorja Curtright, who died of a heart attack. Their daughter Mary Sheldon is also a writer. He later married a former child artist, Alexandra Joyce Kostoff.
Sidney Sheldon wrote over 18 novels and over 300 million copies were sold. He had over 21 major motion picture, 200 television scripts, and six Broadway plays. His novels have been translated into 51 languages over 180 countries including Chinese, Russian, Dutch, Japanese, Turkish, Greek, Korean, Hebrew and Indonesian. He is one of the few authors to have had major films and television blockbuster series. In 1994, he had a golden palm star on Palm spring walk of stars. He died on January 30, 2007, due to pneumonia when he was 89. The Los Angeles Times described him as 'Mr. Blockbuster' after his death and also as 'Prince of Potboilers'. In 2000, November 2nd was announced as the Sidney Sheldon Day. In 1999, he was given the 'Great authors of the twentieth-century' stamp. He is also a holder of Guinness world record for the most translated Author. Los Angeles public library gave him the Honourable Citizen Award.
