Buy Quilts & Covers online at Snapdeal
Quilting is the technique used to make quilts. It consists of sewing three layers of fabric together. The topmost layer is made of cloth, the middle layer is wool or padding and the last layer is knit wool. In Great Britain comforters are also known as quilts, these, though unpadded are at least made of two layers. The top fabric used is decorative on the outside and can be made of anything from patch-work pieces to exquisite embroidery. At one time in history, quilts had a cultural importance mainly in the United States. It was the norm to salvage pieces of fabric and use it for making quilts as import fabrics were extremely expensive and local woven fabrics would wear out too easily and involved a lot of labour. Quilts were made as a way to express creativity. During a certain period, women were expected to make a certain number of quilts before they were married into the family. There were a number of different types of quilts to commiserate a marriage. One of the most interest things about quilts is that they were usually made by a number of women either from the same household or from the neighbourhood. Quilts were also made to raise money for the community, fundraising for war and for a departing minister.
Types of Quilts
There a number of types of quilts based on technique, region and design. Some of the techniques are tarpunto, applique, reverse applique, English paper piecing and foundation piece. There are different types of quilting styles based on the region or that are unique to their nationality like in North America there were Amish quilts, Baltimore album quilts, African-American quilts and so on.. British quilts, Italian quilts, Provençal quilts in Europe, quilts from China, Japan, Bangladeshi quilts also exist. In Africa and South America we have Tivaevae quilts from the Cook Islands, Egyptian quilts called Khayamiya and Mola textiles from Kuna.
The most obvious use of quilts is to keep people warm during winter and to be used as a blanket of sorts. At times, it is also used as a form of decoration or a bedspread as much as it is used to keep warm. It also makes for a great gift as the work on some quilts are exquisite and the material is of extremely high quality.
