THE PHONE IS RECEIVED HAD A FAULT, ONE OF THE TWO STEREO SPEAKERS WAS NOT WORKING. I NOTICED IT RIGHT AWAY. Snapdeal delayed a little to replace the product, the courier company Velex was partly responsible for it. Except the browser and Sailfish app market everything seems fine. Also, one glitch is that while in music player listening a song, and I lock the screen, and then I unlock, it gets back to the home screen with open apps, kinda inconvenient, because I wanna change the songs right away and not again tap on the music cover to go to the app.

So I finally decided to ditch my archaic P1i mobile as it failed on me after serving faithfully for 6 years! As I have been involved in Linux / open source community lately, news of a brand new mobile Jolla and its Sailfish OS got my attention. When I heard of the news that it is going to hit online stores in India, I could hardly contain my excitement to give it a try. After reading mixed reviews, went ahead and took the plunge to get one for myself! Although still regret the delayed decisions as I sadly missed the VIP free kit offered for first 90 Customers! Goofy Design Finesse: ( Finnish ) The device is manufactured in Finland, which you may recall houses another once-so-mighty-and-powerful Mobile company, and the operating system is designed by pool of talented engineers spread across the world. To give some background, this initiave was born when few frustrated enginners left Nokia after it shevled its MeeGo linux based OS project post MS alliance. Sailfish OS is carefully crafted to exploit the new paradigms of touch form factor and does a pretty good job of providing a true gesture oriented interactions to tasks. Admittedly, has a steep learning curve and needs some time to get accustomed to the gesture based design. Thankfully, Jolla team has included a Tutorial installed by default and helps in clearly explaining the different gestures that are used. However, once you get used to it and your muscle memory is committed with these actions, multi-tasking becomes a reality. In Jolla sailor parlance - once you learn the ropes, every task is really a swipe / flick / pull away. At first, I felt it is complicated but then realized it is just "new" and probably more effective than other OS out there. Since my old phone is neither Android / iPhone, there is nothing much to unlearn. Other folks may miss the back button. A crude analogy that comes to my mind is while one learns to ride a bike at first changing gears is an arduous and complicated mechanism wherein with little practice riding it later is done without any conscious effort. And, I was at home just in couple of days.... Feel at Home: Sailfish's Home screen presents thumbnail previews of all open applications in a dashboard like fashion that allows oen to swiftly switch between applications. Thumbnail covers show live previews of all native applications in a grid (Max of 3x3). Another remarkable feature to be noted is that the cover actions which allows user to carry out basic tasks within Home screen without having to navigate into application. Eg: One could refresh tweets or mails or weather details, write mails or tweets, switch cities in weather application, play/pause/ go to next track in media player - all of these can be done with swipe gesture from the home screen itself. Imagine if the live Tiles of Windows OS are all Android widgets...or something close to that Cool Also, from any running application one could just have a 'peek' look at home screen by swiping slowly without leaving the active application. Say, you had initiated a download and just want to see the progress made without actually leaving what you're doing. Further, to close all applications, say while leaving home, just long press and dragging the Pulley menu offers an option to close all running applications. Another important thing to note is that home or application screens do not clog the display with status of battery, network, time, etc and can be seen on demand by dragging down the screen. (Much like how one would want to set the taskbar to auto-hide in smaller displays). Best of Both worlds: Although Jolla has its own store that hosts quite a number of native applications, it allows users to run Android Apps ( in an emulator ) by installing from Android stores such as Aptoide and Yandex, ( Sorry, No Google play store yet ) that hosts most of the popular Android applications. I have been using few applications - Communication clients like Whatsapp, Telegram,etc and have played some popular games such as Subway Surfer, etc without any reportable hassles sparing some minor integration issues. Eg: Not being able to create Contacts in phone from Whatsapp. (There was an Whatsapp equivalent for Sailfish Mitakuluu that worked so well when I installed till Whatsapp banned the unofficial client recently) Nonethless, the native ecosystem in growing and I expect lot of developers to pitch in and port their applications to Sailfish once it gains a significant user base. Particularly, popular KDE applications could soon be ported as the underlying technology used here is Qt . For users, to truly experience the gesture based design, I believe Jolla needs to do some work to entice the developer crowd. At least, commonly used applications need to be ported first to gain popularity among non-geek community. Hardware specs may not be lucrative enough, however it excels in performance by making the most out of what would be considered today as modest processing and memory power. It feels good to hold it and believe it is just right-sized for single hand operations. In my usage of close to a month, it has crashed seldom and so far seems rock solid and very stable. Battery discharge seems to fine, one can hardly complain given the way other OS's drain battery in few hours. Battery seems to last for 8 hours with regular phone and data usage (Wi-Fi at home / Mobile Data in office). I am not yet carrying a charger to office, which I think is great. RAM usage is close to 600MB with few applications running, CPU seems to clock 60 to 70% when few Andoid games are open - there is some work expected around memory management, especially when Android applications are open. Also, read that for the upcoming release 10 zRAM option will be enabled by default in Kernel to enhance performance. Have no particular complaints on hardware - Decent display resolution, 16GB internal storage, good calling experience, comes with 8MP main and 2MP front camera . Although the in-built speakers are sub-par for media experience - I end up plugging earphones or bluetooth speaker for it. As noted earlier, no buttons on display ensure maximum screen real estate is available for Sailfish and Apps. (Android apps show a back button though) The Other Half: This is really a unique offering from Jolla where the phone's back cover (fancily called the Other Half ) can communicate to device.for isntance, changing to a different color cover could change the ambience of the entire device. Fun, isn't it? Yes, the Sailfish OS is hardware aware of the attached back cover, so through the other half port one can add a new functionality to device. There is a successful funding of other half keyboard that one can attach to Jolla device for a fully functional physical key board. I can see unlimited potential through the Other half and hopefully we will see lot of innovation in this area, like we saw incase of RPi. To Buy or not to Buy? Although it all boils down to individual choice, my recommendation is that if you're bored of the status quo and ready to experiment and explore something really fresh you should give Jolla a try. It is already production ready for Linux lovers. tl;dr - Jolla is a smart phone in very sense, it expects it users to be really smart!

Sailfish OS is just amazing. Anyone looking for a different feel of UI on phone, I would strongly recommend Jolla. Few people have issues with less number of apps, not to worry Jolla has Android app support which means we can run Android application on Jolla. Love the phone. Has a quality feel to hold and looks great. The other half doesn't look bulky at all. Was bit worried to find seal broken when opened package. Since phone looked untouched, and everything was in place I didn't bother that much.

awsome mobile.. everything different from android and iphone this is what i needed. apps and options need to be developed other than everythingquick access.

I have been using the phone for 3 months now, its battery and its performance has amazed me. Though you have less apps in the jolla store, most of the andriod apps works. The touch usage is simply great.

It does Have good looks..means nice display..touch is good. camera not that great a slight bluish tint it has..low light photography is good though..recent call list not that great..hard to search for contacts from recent call list..Not all android apps are compatible..doesn't have a file explorer..the available file explorer in jolla store,if not properly used can accidentally delete files inside your root directory.. above all it doesent come with a recovery menu similar to android,which is way too easy...here you have to download putty and connect using telnet to port 10.42.66.66 and there comes the recovery...my phone was turned off during automatic update through air and the phone end in boot loop..have to go through the procedure jolla mentioned and it helped me save my phone..here we dont have any service center in kerala...above all it does have issue with wifi too..like if u add a wifi network,next time when u turn-on wifi,it wont automatically detect the wifi-network,which i have added...

From user's perspective: This phone's gesture based control is very nice: Whenever you need to go to home screen, simply swipe from right edge to left. When you want to look at the notifications, swipe from the bottom edge to top. It also provides LED notifications to know about the missed calls and unread messages. For diagnostic tests, it provides an application, which can be started by dialling in *#*#310#*#* or by typing in csd command from the terminal. Native applications are few, but they are good enough. For those of you who wants android applications, it is possible to run those using android support. If you want more applications, enable developer mode and install the warehouse application from openrepos.net. From developer's perspective: Once the developer mode is activated, it provides us with a terminal. (We need to register with jolla for that) Then we can log in to the phone with ssh (sshd will be running in the phone) All the terminal commands available in any linux based OS is available in Sailfish too. We may also install gcc, g++, gdb and develop terminal based programs, so it's very good for automating our tasks! We are not forced to use java to write our applications like in android, which is the reason I never owned an android device. We can also use filezilla for transferring files using ssh.
