Introduction
There are a number of applications that require an abrasion tool which runs at a high speed and takes away small amounts of material from the work piece, a little at a time. Grinding Wheel Types
Grinding wheels discs are composite materials made up of an abrasive material that is suspended in a cementing matrix held together by a strong bond. They are normally made to be extremely tough as the power tools which employ them spin at several thousand revolutions per minute, putting an enormous stress on the wheels that could cause them to explode. The type of abrasive and cementing matrix used depends on the material of the work piece that is being ground or cut. The abrasive materials are usually Aluminum oxide, Silicon carbide, Ceramic or Diamond. The matrix can be clay, resin, silicate or rubber based. Some grinding wheels discs are also made up of solid metallic discs with the abrasive particles bonded to their surface. The size of the abrasive depends on the degree of grinding action required. High grinding rates require bigger abrasive particles and finer particles produce smoother grinding. The grinding wheel diameters come in several standard sizes that allow them to be fitted on the right power tool. Cup brushes use metallic wires as the abrasion tool and are normally used in low abrasion grinding or finishing operations.
