About The Director:
Born in Tokyo in 1910, Akira Kurosawa's early training was as a painter. He entered the film industry as an assistant director and directed his first film - Sanshiro Sugata - in 1943. Kurosawa's breakthrough film Rashomon released in 1950 and won the Golden Lion at Venice Film Festival. In a directorial career spanning over five decades, Kurosawa went on to win the most prestigious of hte cinemativ awards. He often worked with the same group of collaborators, including the actor Toshiro Mifune, Tastsuya Nakadai and Takashi Shimura. Kuroasawa's films have had a major influence on world cinema, and have been the inspiration behind films like The Magnificent Seven, A Fistful of Doolars and the Star Wars films. In 1984 Kurosawa was awarded the Legion d'Honneur, the highest decoration in France. In 1990 he was given an Academy Honorary Award for cinematic accomplishments that have inspired, delighted, enriched and entertained worldwide audiences and influenced filmmakers throughout the world.
