Paco Rabanne was born in San Sebastian, in the Spanish Basque country. He spent his childhood under a hail of bombs in Spain, then in France. Until 1966, Courreges, Cardin, Balenciaga, and Givenchy encouraged him and bought his sketches and Gerard Pipart, who had just joined Nina Ricci, gave him some styles to embroider. In 1973, Paco Rabanne introduced his first fragrance, Paco Rabanne Pour Homme and1995 saw the launch of XS Pour Elle which is a floral, limpid fragrance.
Launched in 1973, Paco Rabanne pour Homme was an innovation at the time, proposing a virile fougère formula (French for "ferny", a fragrance family with foresty and lavender smells) advertised in a memorable, iconoclastic series of print advertisements that defied stereotypes and redefined the role of men in the era of sexual revolution. The scent, after all those years, is still deliciously defiant and ruggedly masculine as of old, we're happy to report. The lavender touch, flanked by herbs and aromatics such as tarragon and clary sage, is fresh and quite soapy, but the more this cologne stays on skin the more it develops a smokier, sophisticated and sexy undercurrent in which oakmoss and sweeter notes take center stage. A perfumery masterpiece and an enduring classic, always encased in the same deep bottle-green flacon.
