Description

Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood and The Story of a Return is a graphical novel published by Random House.

Synopsis

Persepolis is an autobiographical graphic novel that depicts the childhood and early adulthood of Marji during Islamic revolution in Iran. The title is a reference to the ancient capital of the Persian Empire.
Marji is raised in an orthodox society where veil is compulsory and secular education is banned. She believes that she can solve these problems by becoming a prophet at the age of six. She watches events like the overthrow of the Shah, the success of the Islamic Revolution and the destructive effects of the war with Iraq. The book depicts the sharp contrast between life at home and life in public through eyes of a young girl.
