Kiyosaki was born and brought up in Hawaii. He graduated as a deck officer from the US Merchant Marine Academy in New York. After his stint in the Marine Corps, he worked as a salesperson selling copy machines for Xerox Corporation. Later, he started several different businesses, many of which achieved moderate success but were shut down on account of bankruptcy. In 1997, he launched Cashflow Technologies, Inc., which owns and operates both the Cashflow and Rich Dad brands. Kiyosaki has appeared on a number of TV channels, generously proffering financial advice to and informing the general public.
