Essential oils are oils which are obtained from the various parts of the plants through the process of distillation. The oils are highly volatile organic compounds present in the plants and are usually named after the plants.
The West Indian Lemongrass or the East Indian Lemongrass species are used in essential oils. Though the colour and fragrance of the West Indian and East Indian species is the same, the former is lighter and fresher.

Uses and Benefits
The essential oil of lemongrass is anti-microbial, anti septic, astringent, bactericidal, carminative (elimination of gases), deodorant, insecticidal, sedative, nervine and a tonic.
In aromatherapy, the oil is used to treat acne, to repel insects like flies and ticks, to relieve muscle pain, indigestion, fever, headaches, stress and nervous exhaustion.
Recommended use:
There are two known effective routes for delivery of essential oils viz direct inhalation and the other by direct skin contact. Based on the primary delivery routes, different ways of using the nature's gift are designed. They are as under:
Inhalation: The most widely used domestic method for experiencing the effects of essential oils is inhalation. Just add a few drops to steaming hot water and inhale the steam.
Bath: For relaxing oneself, the ideal method is to add in a few drops of relaxing and calming essential oils to the water in the bath tub for complete relaxation. The oil can be added in a Jacuzzi as well.
Facial steam: The essential oil can be used for cleansing routine during a facial. Just add a few drops to a facial steamer to avoid direct skin application.
Facial oil Blend: The essential oil of interest to be added in carrier oil such as almond, apricot, jojoba or coconut and then perform the routine facial.
Body massage: Select the right essential oil for the desired body massage. Post selection add the essential oil to the carrier oil for massage.
Room fragrance: To experience a holistic environment at home or at work, just add a few drops of essential oil desired to the room diffuser. The room is set with the ambience desired.
Bath salts: A few drops of desired essential oil can be added to the bath salt before scrubbing.
Contraindications:
1) Avoid use during pregnancy and lactation as information regarding safety and efficacy in these conditions is lacking.
2) Rare cases of hypersensitivity are reported.
3) In case of lemongrass, Tisserand and Balacs give glaucoma (oral administration only), prostatic hyperplasia, and caution for dermal administration for hypersensitive, diseased, or damaged skin.
4) Lemongrass is not recommended for children under two years of age.
