Geronimo Stilton is the leading character of the Geronimo Stilton series, the editor of the most famous newspaper in Mouse Island, The Rodent's Gazette.
Geronimo Stilton is feeling more jumpy than usual when he walks back to his office during the night. He has been doing some research on scary stories and he has forgotten to bring the papers home with him.
When he gets to the office of The Rodent's Gazette, he sees a light shining through one of the windows. Geronimo is surprised for he is careful about saving energy and always switches off all the lights when he leaves the building.
When he enters his office, he finds a bat waiting for him with a document from his friend Creepella von Cacklefur, and a command to publish it in his paper.
Geronimo reads it and finds it scary but interesting. When he shows it to his colleagues and his grandfather, William Shortpaws, all of them agree that it is chilling and fascinating. So, Geronimo decides to publish the story of Creepella Von Cacklefur: The Thirteen Ghosts.
Creepella von Cacklefur and her niece, Shivereen, visit Squeakspeare Mansion, the historic residence of the famous writer William Squeakspeare. Its current resident, Bobby Squeakspeare, a direct descendant of the great writer, is afraid that the mansion is being haunted by his illustrious ancestors.
As Creepella and Shivereen explore the mansion to determine whether it really is being haunted, they come across interesting characters like Grandma Crypt, a meat eating plant called Chompers and Booey the Poltergeist.
