This modesty of Col's perhaps explains why a man should come down to posterity bracketed with a passing incident, when some of his real services to his country and to the development of the times had been overlooked. This does not mean that Col was a great man. As has often been said, however, the tendencies of the times fre quently show themselves more clearly in the minor personages of an epoch than in the geniuses; accordingly in the career of this Human ist and diplomat we may be able to bring to light some of the im portant characteristics and tendencies Of the pre-renaissance in France.
