Abstract:
Abstract of thesis titled

Submitted by

For the Degree of Master of Social Sciences in Criminology at the University of Hong Kong in August 2007
The study focuses on the ways the Chinese media reports on triad crime, drawing from the three main Hong Kong Chinese presses, Apple Daily, Ming Pao and The Sun. The study adopts the social constructionism perspective and textual content analysis. Data from the Ming Pao newspaper were collected from 1970 to 2007 to examine triad related trends crime and the reporting style of Ming Pao. In the present study, the question will focus on: 1) are there many more adjectives, photos and desires to use triad jargon with triad name to describe violent triad crime in Chinese tabloid newspapers (Apple Daily and The Sun) than in Chinese conservative newspapers (Ming Pao)? 2) are Chinese tabloid newspaper (Apple Daily and The Sun) more likely to put triad violent crime on the front page than in Chinese conservative newspapers (Ming Pao). 3) Has there been an increasing number of different kinds of triad crime from 1970 to 2007. 4) Do tabloid Chinese newspapers (Apple Daily and The Sun) use much more specific triad jargon to construct particular images on certain triad crimes? The findings showed that Chinese tabloids newspapers do really use a lot more triad jargon, exaggerated adjectives and large, colourful pictures to illustrate triad violence than did in mainstream press (Ming Pao). However, the reporting style of main text content in Ming Pao is the same as Apple Daily and The Sun; all used the same style of narrative. Thus, their position is not located at both ends, popular press and official press. In social constructionism perspective, the current study showed that newspapers heading impressed the public that there is a high rate of triad crime. However, statistics showed that it is the opposite case, triad related crime decreased gradually in the last few years (2003-2007). According to Social 1Constructionism, it is possible that the media project an image of the triad which influence the mindset of the public and thus has an effect on the consequential behaviours. Lastly, current entertainment industry and its influence on society were critically examined in social constructionism perspective. 2
