Steam Distillation
Family: Zingiberaceae.
Habitat: Native to southern Asia; extensively cultivated in India, China, Indonesia, Jamaica and Haiti. The oil is mainly distilled in India, China and Japan. Some roots are imported to Europe.
Odour: Warm, honey-like, sweet floral aroma, peach leaf and spice-like undertones.
Part of plant used: Rhizome and Roots.
Therapeutic indication: Circulation, Muscles and Joints: Arthritis, muscular aches and pains, rheumatism.
Digestive System: Anorexia, sluggish digestion, liver congestion.
Mind/Emotions: It rejuvenates the mind. It calms down and gives relief from stress, tension, anxiety, depression.
Safety Data: The ketone 'turmerone' is moderately toxic and irritant in high concentration. Possible sensitization problems. The essential oil of turmeric must be used in moderation and with care for a fairly limited period.

Habitat: Cultivated throughout most of India, Afghanistan, Egypt, the West Indies and the Shychelle islands.
Odour: Characteristic odour warm, spicy pungent & reminiscent of thymol.
Part of plant used: Seed
Dosha effect of oil: Ajowan specifies Vatta and kapha Dosha. So it can be used effectively in all digestive problems.
Therapeutic indication: Powerful antiseptic and germicide, carminative.
Body: Ajowan should always be diluted well when applied to the body.
Skin: Avoid direct sunlight on skin to which this oil has been appiled.
Safety Data: Possible mucous membrane and dermal irritant, due to high thymol. Should be avoided in pregnancy.

Odour: A sweet, warm-spicy dry, tenacious odour
Part of plant used: Leaf
Dosha effect of oil: Pitta and kapha
Therapeutic indication: Skin care: Lice, scabies, tooth and gum care, warts, wasp stings
Circulation muscle and joints: Poor circulation, rheumatism
Digestive System: Anorexia, colitis, diarrhea, dyspepsia, intestinal infection, sluggish digestion, spasm

Safety Data: The leaf oil is relatively non-toxic though possibly irritant due to cinnamaldehyde. Its major component, eugenol, causes irritation to the mucous membranes, use in moderation.
