Excerpt from Self Building Through Common-Sense Methods
A celebrated preacher once began his ser mon with these words: I am standing before you like a tree. Many of you have come with little hatchets, and when you go out of this church some one among you will say, I did not quite like that remark about card parties.' Out comes your hatchet and off goes the first limb. Another will say, 'that remark was not in good taste.' Again the hatchet, and another branch falls; and so on until nothing but the trunk remains.
