Synopsis

The Merchant of Venice is an English play written between 1596 and 1598 and this book offers you the complete text written by Shakespeare on one hand and line-by-line translation of the text on the other for easy understanding. The play is about Bassanio, who needs money so that he can marry Portia, who happens to be a wealthy heiress in Belmont. Bassanio turns to his wealthy friend Antonio who says that he cannot help him as his ships are out in the sea though he can be the guarantor if Bassanio lends money from Shylock, a Jewish moneylender.

Shylock didn't like Antonio and he agrees to grant a loan on one condition and that is if Antonio fails to repay the loan, then Shylock may take a pound of Antonio's flesh. Read the play to know more.
