This volume has been compiled with the help of materials taken from Mr. J. G. Cumming, I.C.S., formerly Collector of Patna.It gives a vast description about the district of Patna.Information regarding natural divisions of the district, natural configuration, hill system, river system, climate and rainfall is specified in this volume. The Gazetteer tells about the rise of Buddhism and Jainism, foundation of Pataliputra, the Muhammadan conquest, the Mutiny, and archaeology. It also enumerates various Muhammadan Governors. It discusses the density of population in the district, migration, dresses, houses, food, languages, religions, towns and villages, village officials, and social and political institutions. The volume states that agriculture was done on upland and lowland tracts. Principal crops grown in the region were rice, maize, Jowar, bajra, wheat, barley, oilseeds, sugarcane and poppy. Rotation method, adequate use of manure, and veterinary assistance helped in improvement and extension of cultivation. Along with the Indian education, European education was developed.

About the Author

Lewis Sydney Steward O'Malley was born on 23 October 1874 at Flitcham, Freebridge Lynn, Norfolk, England. He was the son of BryanO'Malley, a minister. He married Ida Sewell Prichard on 24 November 1900 at The Cathedral, Calcutta, India. He died in 1941 at Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. Lewis was the British Civil Servant in India. He was educated in Norwich and Hertford College, Oxford (B. A.). In 1898, he entered I.C.S. He worked as Magistrate and Collector in Bengal for quite a few years. Later, he served in General and Revenue Department in Bengal as a civil servant. He got retired in 1924 as C.I.E. During his lifetime, he published several books, such as Bengal District Gazetteers, Santal Parganas,andPurnea. He was the editor of the whole series. He also wrote Indian Caste Customs in 1934, Popular Hinduism in 1935, and Modern India and the West in 1941.
